What to bring to renew your registration
- Your DMV renewal notice (the letter that arrives before your registration expires). If you don't have it, your plate number and the last 5 digits of the VIN.
- Proof of insurance, only if your notice asks for it. If it doesn't, your insurance company already reported it to the DMV.
- Your smog certificate, if your notice says you need one.
Not sure what your notice is asking for? Bring it in or send us a photo on WhatsApp and we'll go over it with you.

If your smog check isn't done yet
You can pay your renewal before the due date to avoid late fees, even if the smog check isn't done. The DMV issues your new registration and sticker once it receives the smog result.
If your car failed smog, you may qualify for a temporary operating permit. It requires proof of insurance and the failed smog inspection report.
Gasoline cars that are 8 model years old or newer usually don't need a smog check to renew; they pay a smog abatement fee instead. Your notice tells you what applies to your car.

If you're bringing a car from another state
The DMV asks you to register it with form REG 343 within 20 days of first driving it in California. It also requires:
- An in-person vehicle verification on form REG 31: the DMV checks the vehicle identification number.
- A California smog certificate for most gasoline cars.
- The out-of-state title or registration.
If something is still missing, the DMV recommends submitting your application and fees on time anyway to avoid penalties. We'll help you put the paperwork together, and the Santa Ana DMV is less than a 40-second walk from our office.
