Si compraste a una persona y no a un dealer con licencia de California, el DMV cobra el impuesto de uso (use tax) al hacer el cambio, salvo que aplique una exención. Algunos traspasos entre familiares pueden quedar exentos de smog o de ese impuesto; se declaran en el formulario REG 256.

• The odometer reading, written on the title or on form REG 262. That form is printed on security paper and can't be downloaded; buyer and seller both sign it.

If you bought from a private person rather than a licensed California dealer, the DMV collects use tax when you transfer, unless an exemption applies. Some transfers between family members can be exempt from smog or from that tax; they're declared on form REG 256.

Avisa al DMV dentro de 5 días con el aviso de venta REG 138 (Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability). Ese aviso te protege si el nuevo dueño recibe multas de estacionamiento o deja el carro abandonado, pero no hace el cambio de dueño: eso lo tiene que completar quien compra.

Si el carro es de gasolina y tiene más de 4 años de modelo, normalmente quien vende tiene que dar el certificado de smog, a menos que tenga uno de los últimos 90 días. Si el carro tiene 4 años de modelo o menos, no se pide smog para la venta y quien compra paga una cuota de transferencia de smog.

Notify the DMV within 5 days with the REG 138 Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability. It protects you if the new owner gets parking tickets or abandons the car, but it does not transfer ownership: the buyer has to complete that.

If the car runs on gasoline and is more than 4 model years old, the seller usually has to provide the smog certificate, unless there's one from the last 90 days. If the car is 4 model years old or newer, no smog is needed for the sale and the buyer pays a smog transfer fee.
