Registration and DMV paperwork

Do I have to go to the DMV to renew my registration?

Not always. The DMV lets you renew online or at a kiosk if you have your car's VIN, pay by card or checking account, have insurance, and the DMV already has your smog certificate on file. If any of that is missing, or you'd rather do it with someone in Spanish, Leslie's is a DMV-licensed registration service and we'll help you in person, right next to the Santa Ana DMV.

Is there a grace period if I'm late on my registration?

No. The DMV doesn't give a grace period. Your registration expires on the exact day printed on your registration card (not just the month on your sticker), and late payments get penalties that grow the longer you wait. If your renewal notice didn't arrive about 60 days ahead, check your card or ask us and we'll look at it with you.

Do I need a smog check to renew my registration?

It depends on your car. Gas cars less than 8 model years old don't need a smog check to renew (they pay a smog abatement fee instead), and electric cars don't either. Most other cars need one every two years; your renewal notice tells you when it's due. Heads-up: if your car fails smog, the renewal isn't finished even if you already paid.

I bought a car: how long do I have to put it in my name?

10 days. Any change of ownership has to be reported to the DMV within 10 days. If you sold the car, you have 5 days to send the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability. We can help with both.

What paperwork do I need for a title transfer?

Usually: the California title (the "pink slip") signed by the seller and the buyer, the transfer fee and use tax, and a smog certificate if one is needed. If the title is lost, a REG 227 form comes first. Gifts, inheritances and out-of-state cars need different paperwork, so bring what you have and we'll go through it.

If I sell my car, do I have to give the buyer a smog certificate?

Yes. The seller gives the new owner a valid smog certificate. If the car is less than four years old, no inspection is needed; the new owner pays a smog transfer fee instead.

Do I need insurance to register my car?

Yes. In California, every car that's driven or parked on the street must be insured, and you must keep proof of insurance in the car. Insurance companies report your coverage to the DMV electronically; if the DMV doesn't get it, it suspends the registration.

What is the minimum car insurance in California?

The law requires liability coverage of at least $30,000 for injury or death of one person, $60,000 for more than one person, and $15,000 for damage to other people's property (often called "30/60/15"). Keep in mind the minimum pays for damage you cause to others, not for your own car. We can quote the minimum and options with more protection.

What happens if I drive without insurance?

It's illegal. You can be fined, your license can be suspended and your car can be impounded. And if you can't show proof of insurance when asked, you get a ticket. If your policy was canceled or lapsed, call us and we'll look at your options.

Can I get car insurance without a driver's license?

Yes, in many cases. You can insure a car in your name even without a license; for example, when someone else with a license is the one driving it. Every case is different, so call or WhatsApp us and we'll tell you your options. More on our no-license insurance page.

Can I use an AB 60 license to get car insurance?

Yes. An AB 60 license is a California driver's license for people who can't prove legal presence but meet the DMV's requirements. Even the state's low-cost auto insurance program accepts it. Bring it in and we'll help you get a quote.

What is an SR-22?

It's the insurance certificate (California Proof of Insurance Certificate, SR 22) that your insurance company files with the DMV to prove you're insured, when the DMV requires it. How long you need it depends on your case. We handle the filing right here. More on our SR-22 page.

I bought another car: is it already covered?

Don't assume it is. Tell your agent or insurance company when you buy or sell a car, or when there's a new driver in your household, ideally before you drive it. WhatsApp us the VIN and we'll help you update your policy.

Can I cancel my insurance if I'm not using the car?

Before you cancel, tell the DMV, or your registration can be suspended. If the car won't be driven or parked on the street, there's the Affidavit of Non-Use form (REG 5090) and the Planned Non-Operation (PNO) option for the registration. We can help with the paperwork.

What does "full coverage" mean?

It's not an official term. It usually means liability (damage you cause to others) plus collision (damage to your car in a crash) and comprehensive (theft, vandalism, weather and other non-crash damage). Before you decide, we'll walk you through what each option includes.

What do I need to get a quote?

The basics: your car's details (year, make and model, or the VIN), your address, and your license if you have one. Call, WhatsApp us, or use the quote form on our homepage.
